AirAsia Malaysia (also known as AirAsia Berhad) is Malaysia’s largest airline and a market leader in low-cost travel across Malaysia and ASEAN. The airline serves 165 destinations in 25 countries, covering domestic routes in Malaysia and international airports in Indonesia, Thailand, and India. In 2010, AirAsia Malaysia and its affiliates, including AirAsia Thailand and AirAsia Indonesia, strengthened their leadership in the low-fare airline market by carrying their 100 millionth guest and surpassing the RM1 billion profit milestone. The airline operates with one of the lowest unit costs, at US$0.023 per available seat kilometer (ASK), and a passenger breakeven load factor of 52%. Its IATA code is AK, and its ICAO code is AXM. Although it operates from several airports, including Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Johor Bahru, and Kuching, its main hub is Kuala Lumpur International Airport, specifically KLIA 2. Its fleet currently consists of 89 aircraft: 68 Airbus A320-200 aircraft and 21 Airbus A320neo aircraft. Established in 2001, AirAsia Berhad (AirAsia Malaysia) was listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in November 2004. AirAsia Group Berhad (AAGB) assumed the listing status of AirAsia Berhad on 16 April 2018 following the completion of an internal reorganization.History
When it was established in 1993, AirAsia was owned by the Malaysian company DRB-HICOM. It was later acquired by former Time Warner executive Tony Fernandes in 2001 for the symbolic price of 1 euro. Since the change in ownership, the airline has turned around its business and recorded a profit as early as 2002. In 2003, AirAsia Malaysia opened a second base at Senai Airport in Johor Bahru, near Singapore. It also began operating international routes to Thailand. Flights to Macau started in June 2004, while Manila and Xiamen in Mainland China followed in 2005. More international routes, including Vietnam and Cambodia, were added later. AirAsia also expanded into other countries, including Thailand through Thai AirAsia and Indonesia through AirAsia Indonesia in 2004. In 2011, AirAsia introduced two hubs: Chiang Mai for AirAsia Thailand and Medan for AirAsia Indonesia. Singapore functions as a virtual hub, where AirAsia ranks among the top 10 airlines by contribution to passenger traffic. AirAsia Philippines started in 2012, followed by AirAsia India in 2013 and AirAsia Japan in 2014. AirAsia also launched a sister company focused on long-haul flights, AirAsia X, in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.Flight Attendant
